What is the proper way to run Category 6 underground?
I'd like to run some Category 6 cabling underground, for a distance of about 120 ft, between a main home and a 2nd unit, for ethernet connectivity between the two homes. I've run Category 5 indoors before, but running Category 6 and underground is a new ballgame for me.

What's not allowed is running an ethernet through a mains conduit, having the ethernet land at an Ethernet cover plate, and then proceed via Ethernet cable which is decidedly not a class 1 wiring method to a local PC, where it enters a data port not hardened for mains power. Nov 2, 2022 · While that makes sense in some situations, 60' is well within normal ethernet range, and the usual solution is to run a separate conduit for data, which can contain any low voltage wires you need - e.g., Ethernet, phone, coax (cable TV), etc. I don't recommend WiFi for this use. Even for one device, hardwired Ethernet will be more reliable.

Also look for UV-resistant cable if it's not going to be buried or otherwise enclosed. As for Cat 5e versus Cat 6, for home use it probably won't matter as you most likely running 100/1000B-T Ethernet and it will run fine on both Cat 5e or Cat 6.

36. While a shielded Cat5/6 cable is designed to protect itself from outside interferance, it isn't recommended to run them side-by-side to your electrical wiring.
