The graphics below are designed to forecast the presence and strength of Atmospheric Rivers using data from the NCEP Global Forecast System (GFS), North American Mesoscale Forecast System (NAM), and Global Ensemble Forecast System (GEFS) models.
Atmospheric Rivers (ARs) are narrow belts of concentrated moisture transported in the atmosphere, and are a key process linking weather and climate. ARs provide beneficial water supply and snowpack. When fewer than the normal number of ARs occur, drought often results.
