Diplomatic tensions between Canada and India have increased as police in Canada investigate what they allege is the involvement of agents of the Indian government in violence in Canada

Nijjar was fatally shot in his pickup truck in June 2023 after he left the Sikh temple he led in the city of Surrey, British Columbia. An Indian-born citizen of Canada, he owned a plumbing business and was a leader in a movement to create an independent Sikh homeland, which is banned in India.

The diplomatic relationship between India and Canada has frayed following allegations from Ottawa that Indian agents were linked to a Sikh leader's murder in Canada. India requested action on extradition cases and refuted Canada's claims.
