The second Monday of October marks Columbus Day and Indigenous People's Day, here is what to know about the history of Columbus Day.

Major retailers, including national stores such as Target and Walmart, will be open on Monday when communities mark Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day. Grocery stores and pharmacies, like Safeway or CVS, will also be open. Be sure to check with your local stores, as they may have reduced hours.

Federal offices will be closed on Oct. 14, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Columbus Day is not a state holiday, according to the Team Kentucky Personnel Cabinet and it is also not a Jefferson County holiday, according to the city's website.

In 1937, President Franklin D. Roosevelt made Columbus Day a federal holiday at the urging of prominent Italian American leaders, such as Generoso Pope in New York City, and Catholic lobbying groups, such as the Knights of Columbus. And so Columbus Day became an official holiday on the American calendar.

All federal and state offices in Indiana will be closed on Monday, Oct. 14. Indy's City-County offices also will be closed for Columbus Day and Indigenous People's Day. The United States Postal Service will be closed Columbus Day. No mail will be delivered.

Columbus Day is a holiday with a long history, but in the past 50 years, debate has developed about the day because of the implications behind it. To some, Columbus Day is simply a day off from work or school.
